All the things we know about technology, economics, and sustainability lead to the potential of electronic barter platforms as an innovative way to improve our consumption and living. However, introducing and fully implementing them in the open market is not easy given the many diverse requirements, factors, and constraints that must be considered. Thus, this research explores the processes involved in the creation of electronic barter platforms, emphasizing how the value-sensitive design (VSD) framework may be applied. Using literature review, user requirements elicitation, and conceptual design as main methodological mechanisms, the researcher navigated the main areas of tension between value categories—privacy and trust, accessibility and security, anonymity and accountability, and the interplay between economic and social values. This shows how VSD prioritizes user values and diversity and ethical considerations in crafting platforms that foster sustainable consumption. The norms concerning these value categories and the design requirements for each were also enumerated to help establish the crucial role that VSD-structured electronic barter platforms may play in the future.
