Due to the lignocellulosic structure of water hyacinth (WH), a pretreatment followed by anaerobic digestion (AD) can significantly improve the process stability during biogas production. Compression is a simple pretreatment method where the substrate is separated into a liquid and solid fraction. However, compression has a risk of suspended solids (SS) entering the liquid fraction, leading to reactor instability during AD. Spontaneous sedimentation is a simple pretreatment method to remove SS from water hyacinth juice (WHJ). This study aims to evaluate the effect of the sedimentation process on the chemical properties of WHJ. The results showed that SS decreased effectively through sedimentation: floating-type WH (5.0 to 3.0), rotten (6.1 to 1.9), and ground (22.4 to 7.8) (unit: g L−1). Dissolved organic carbon concentration in the floating type decreased slightly (1385 to 1259) whereas the rotten (1052 to 1197) and ground (6897 to 7788) increased after the pretreatment (unit: mg L−1). Sedimentation led to an increase of ammonium concentration in floating and ground WHJ, an increase of 14.8 and 60.4%, respectively, due to solubilization occurring with the degradation process, whereas there was a 42.5% decrease in the rotten-type WHJ due to the rotten properties of the plant. This suggests that sedimentation pretreatment with shredding and compression significantly improved WHJ as a substrate for biological processes, which can be considered for designing appropriate treatment methods.
