Gastrointestinal bleeding is one of the most common gastrointestinal diagnoses. GI bleeding can result in critical illness and need for management in the intensive care unit. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding and its management can be divided into variceal and non-variceal etiologies. The ICU pharmacist plays a key role in the management of these patients. In patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding, pharmacists can help with the proper use of resuscitative measures and empiric medical therapy and, following endoscopic interventions, ensure that the correct definitive medical management strategies are implemented.
