The Castilian unrest reached the Kingdom of Valencia after just five weeks, spreading from the city of Valencia to most of the other main towns in between one and five days. The city of Valencia offers us perhaps the most powerful back-story to the outbreak, outlined in Chap. 5 , and the most detailed accounts of the manner in which the events unfolded and their impacts. The presence of the king’s brother, Martí, alongside the council in the attempted defence of the jueria, combined with their self-exculpatory, ever-evolving and somewhat inconsistent accounts (including miracle stories) provide fascinating material in understanding both the events and the motivations of those involved. The richness of the narrative, including the key presence of Castilian sailors as instigators, rapid transmission of information and the movement of rioters between towns, also offers some of the strongest evidence of the mechanisms of contagion.
