Theories of social contagion and crowd behaviour cast light on the mechanisms through which communal violence spreads and are critical to understanding the events of 1391. Deep-seated mentalities concerning the Jews, contained in polemics, art and literature contributed to the initial conditions for contagious outbreaks but a key element is how these ideas would have fed directly into the consciousness of those involved.
