Mnemosyne project is a community-based artistic project about being and having grandmothers. Directed by Cláudia Andrade, it is a participatory performance on documental and biographical memory, drawing or imagining a symbolic feminine senior common. Cláudia worked for five years with fifteen groups of grandmothers in different Portuguese towns. Each group made a theatre performance about and based on their life memories, triggered by Claudia’s biography, and rehearsed a participatory dramaturgy by looking at different sociocultural positions of women within society. The project’s outputs include a documentary, a short film, a performative lecture, and a new theatrical performance celebrating five years of affect activism. The performance brought together some of the one hundred and one grandmother’s participants from different territories. Finally, there was an exhibition installation and an edition of a book. The article combines research on affect activism and ethnographic gestures, such as performative interviews, as a frame to understand how participatory dramaturgy experiences elicit expectations, norms, concepts, and behaviours by affects. It shapes experience through the emotional drive and deduces affect as a trigger for potential self-empowerment and social transformation. It will propose some contributions to measuring the impact evaluation of this community-based theatre case study.
