Frail elderly people consistently have excessive levels of emergency department (ED) admissions, worldwide. Residents of Nursing Homes (NH) are the most fragile group of elderly people, characterized by significant multimorbidity, functional and cognitive impairment, and a high susceptibility to acute diseases. ED admissions often result in hospitalization and can incur significant costs for both the resident and the healthcare system. In this article we describe the socio-demographic characteristics, data relating to the use of the ED and place of death of 2555 episodes of ED admissions in the Castelo Branco Local Health Unit, in the year 2019, by NH residents. With an average age of 86 years (median 88); 62.90% were female; 46.46% widowed; 65.52% had no formal education. Severe levels of multimorbidity were observed, with 42.10% having dementia and 91.2% being polymedicated. Admissions were evenly distributed across all days of the week and months of the year, with approximately 57.00% occurring between 8 am and 4 pm.; 58.60% visited the ED due to the worsening of a previous illness; 58.70% had two or more ED admissions in the last year; and 23.41% were admitted to an acute care service. Of these hospitalizations, 23.30% died in the acute service.
