Population Ageing and Urbanisation: Creating Sustainable Age-Friendly Cities and Communities
摘要
Population aging is taking place across all countries of the world, raising major issues for the future direction of public policy. By 2050, one in six people in the world will be sixty-five and over (16%). In Europe and North America, one in four persons is expected to be aged sixty-five or over by 2050. Of equal importance is the continuing spread of urbanization, with 55 percent of the world’s population now living in urban environments. An important dimension bringing these elements together concerns the policy of developing sustainable cities, one of the global targets identified in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG11). The focus of SDG 11 includes creating inclusive, safe, and resilient cities, emphasising issues such as affordable housing, sustainable transportation systems, limiting the environmental impact of cities, and creating safe and inclusive blue and green spaces. This chapter makes the case that making cities and communities ‘age-friendly’ can itself be an important component in creating sustainable environments. It provides an overview of the debate about both sustainable and what has been termed ‘age-friendly’ communities. The discussion outlines a series of initiatives which should be developed to strengthen initiatives which can support older people ageing in place as well as contribute to goals associated with limiting the environmental impact of urban environments.
