The phrase “children are not just small adults” is widely used when discussing clinical research in paediatric populations. However, it is important to recognise that a paediatric population is very diverse and often requires subdivision into sub-categories based on age and growth. This chapter explores the definition of a paediatric patient and some of the considerations that underpin further subdivision of the paediatric population.
