Every mathematical subject is shaped by its isomorphisms. In point set topology, these are homeomorphisms, in Riemannian geometry these are isometries, in group theory these are group isomorphisms, and so forth. This point of view is part of Felix Klein’s Erlangen Program, and it has exerted a strong influence over mathematics for the past hundred years.
