There is hardly any aspect of our day that’s devoid of communicationCommunication in one or the other form. In a country like IndiaIndia that is highly prone to disastersDisaster both natural and man-made, disaster managementDisaster management becomes an important area of interest both for academicians and policyPolicymakers. This study presents a perspective on how communication can aid in enhancing the efficiency of disaster managementDisaster management across the country during disaster preparedness, mitigation, resilienceResilience and recovery. It diverges from the dominant pattern of analyzing the role of social mediaSocial media as evident in available literature and goes on to conduct a contextual analysis of the terms ‘communication’ and ‘media’ in the documents issued by two major bodies involved in disaster managementDisaster management namely National Disaster Response Force and National Institute of Disaster ManagementDisaster management. The objectives of this study are to explore the role of communicationCommunication and mediaMedia in policies related to disaster managementDisaster management in IndiaIndia and to suggest measures to improve communication in disaster managementDisaster management. The researchers adopt an interpretive paradigm and use triangulation method to collect and analyze data. The reports and policyPolicy documents available on the websites of NDRFNDRF and NIDMNIDM were analyzed using content analysis and the findings were discussed using thematic analysis in the subsequent section. The findings of this study suggest that communication is used in disaster managementDisaster management but mostly in infrastructural context. It is regarded as an infrastructural element more than a practice. Also, the role of mediaMedia in disaster managementDisaster management is limited post infrastructural damages that cut off the community from authorities. This further suggests that involvement of communication strategies can be of vital importance in improving our existing disaster managementDisaster management performance and help us mitigate losses at different levels that disasters cause every year.
