The Need for Renewable Energy
摘要
This chapter considers the sustainability of our present approaches to energy use. In particular, the chapter deals with two aspects of our current energy use that make it unsustainable, resource limitations and environmental consequences. In the first instance, at current rates of use our limited fossil fuel reserves would last a few decades, for oil and natural gas and for around a century, for coal. Environmental concerns over the use of fossil fuels include pollution and global climate change. It is possible that decreasing fossil fuel demand as a result of these concerns will lead to a transition to alternative energy sources on a shorter time scale. The present chapter considers the consequences of continued fossil fuel use in detail.
