The Generation of 1995 in Catalonia: The First Children of Both Democracy and the Linguistic Normalization of Catalan
摘要
In this chapter, based on analyses grounded in formal sociology, Vann describes a generational entelechy that guides lifelong ways of doing being Catalan based on shared sociohistorical experiences uniquely common to Gen ’95ers during their youth. Understanding Gen ’95ers’ entelechy requires deconstructing such formative experiences, including newfound democratic freedoms and daily exposure to institutionalized language revitalization efforts during a time of rapid political and sociocultural change. Vann analyzes such efforts as mobilizations of Catalan languaging, language-borne cultural products, and the translocalizing ideologies of Catalan language normalization. Catalan language mass media and Catalan immersion schools represent key nation-building projects in this regard. Vann concludes that Gen ’95ers’ progressive language shift and heightened sensitivities to other people’s perceived languaging abilities index the progressive globalization of Catalan society.
