This chapter serves as an introduction to the anthology The Call of the Eco-Weird in Fiction, Film, and Games, as well as an introduction to the idea of the “eco-weird.” We begin by questioning why we need a new approach when there are so many sub-categories of eco-analysis. The eco-weird starts with the intersection of weird fiction and environmental thought but is also a mode of environmental analysis more generally. It primarily focuses on how the environment as our home is at once both familiar and strange. The eco-weird bears witness to the otherness of the natural world, which can inspire horror but also awe or wonder. The chapter ends with a brief summary of the collective chapters that make up the related volume; while there is significant overlap across the chapters, there is no singular definition of the eco-weird to which they are confined. Rather they all, in their own ways, consider the disruption of the familiar that occurs when we attend to our entanglement with the environment and the gap between the human and more-than-human worlds.
