Media on Europeanised Football
摘要
This chapter explores the role of media outlets in relaying information about, contact with, and experiences of Europe to fans through their coverage of Europeanised football. News media consumption is a substantial part of engaging with football—also confirmed by our survey analysis in Chap. 6 . Therefore, we aim to uncover potential effects on European identities through the emergence of a European Public (Football) Sphere. Building especially upon the theoretical foundations on identity formation through the emergence of a public sphere (see Sect. 2.1 ) and the examination of football as a media phenomenon (see Sect. 3.2.3 ), we take a view towards the contribution that the mediatisation of football has for the formation of identities within the European football landscape. For this purpose, we discuss our quantitative analysis of football online articles from 11 news outlets from Norway, Germany, Spain, and Poland across seven football seasons.
