Made jointly with Begonia Tamarit, From 60° North combines live-action film with animation techniques. Research was dependent upon Tamarit’s fluency in Spanish for the translation of survivors’ accounts of the return voyage of the Spanish Armada in 1588-9. The film’s methodology is explained from learning to film in rough seas to using complex animation techniques. The chapter concludes with a summary of Raban and Tamarit’s sailing experiences together and a short reflection on how they have been able to apply lessons from sailing to filmmaking including the importance of having an embodied understanding for calculating the sun’s position and predicting imminent weather changes.
