The use of databases in Computer Integrated Manufacturing (correlating with Horizontal and Vertical Integration as a pillar of Industry 4.0) is essential to optimize the use of knowledge based on information gathered during several years and even more. The database types used in CIM are simple to complex in development and operation with their usage spanning over storing and sharing e.g., CAD models, final analysis in CAE, part programs in CAM. At a SME level both relational and semantic databases are pertinent while at a more ambitious level bots may also operate along with semantic databases to align the businesses and minimize the effort that would otherwise be required. There needs to be a formal arrangement between SMEs or LSEs once the bots have identified a potential source of information.
