This chapter is dedicated to discussing the four prominent numerical approximation methods; namely, Finite Difference Method (FDM), Finite Element Method (FEM), Finite Volume Method (FVM), and Boundary Element Method (BEM). Many powerful, widely used CAE software adopt one or more of these methods as their fundamental computational approach in solving the differential or integral equations that govern the engineering problem at hand. Finally, application of computer-aided engineering methods in solid, liquid, and gas-based products is reviewed, which is followed by case studies.
