摘要

Multicultural urban development is a strategy that aims to provide a reasonable accommodation to diverse cultural groups within a certain community, by identifying the needs of minorities on the one hand and rebuilding the common ground underlying policies and programmes on the other. Whereas the multiplicity of societies and their distinct cultures has become a prominent feature in many Mediterranean cities; quality of life has turned out to be a prominent principle in shaping the structure and form of urban areas. Drawing on a series of quantitative studies and qualitative surveys, the study examines the challenge of Mediterranean multiculturalism, to build adaptable socio-infrastructure that reflects the concerns and interests of specific groups, while preserving cultural differences. Further, the research discusses an achieved adaptive planning agenda of the Mediterranean historical multicultural city centre of Beirut, Lebanon.
