HealthHealth is crucial for building resilience as the basis for the economic, cultural, and social future of a population. Here the main goal is to promote wider access to good health and well-beingWell-being, by enhancing lived experiences across public spacesPublic space. It is understood that construction that depends on fossil-based petrochemical materials causes significant harm to ecosystems, the environment, and our health. We also acknowledge that the impact of architecture and designed environments and their microclimates on human health is not yet fully understood, though with recent evidence indicating it contributes to various diseases, including chronic conditions. In contrast, we know that circular design and regenerative materials and construction processes minimize waste and CO2 emissions, typically allowing for biodegradation or reuse, and thereby eliminate continuous human exposure to toxins and pollutants. This paper will explore a recent prototype and a project for public spaces that adopt ecological approaches to design and construction. The underlying goal is that the prototypes address microclimate adjustments and resulting comfort improvements in public spacesPublic space, accelerating the function as social condensers, as outdoor livable environment and mitigating spaces for heat islands, as receptacles for increased biodiversity and urban niches with improved comfort for all users in outdoor activities. One example is a design for a micro plaza, prototype installation and implementation project into public spacePublic space, while another prototype explores the idea of urban furnitureUrbanfurniture as a multifunctional microclimate machine. Both draw on methods of integrating digital design strategies, digital and analog fabrication and wide variety of traditional materials being rethought.
