The Use of Biomimetic Approaches to Enhance Sustainability in the Design of Smart Cities
摘要
Smart city is an inclusive term that encompasses smart urbanism, smart economy, smart technology and energy, sustainable and smart environment. The concept of smart cities has been considered by many researchers, architects, urbanists, and designers to improve urban infrastructures and services as well as the environment, social, and economic conditions. It is viewed that the development of smart cities can help in achieving a better sustainable, green, and efficient city. Sustainability on the other hand prioritises the greenery in cities to enhance the quality of life, hence achieving a smart city using advanced information and communication technology to facilitate the daily activities of citizens and to improve the environment. However, according to an extensive literature review, the sustainable city has not been completely achieved yet due to some constraints. These include environmental challenges, energy usage and consumption, biodiversity issues that affect the cities’ ecosystems, and so on. These problems should be considered in the planning and design of more inclusive and resilient cities. It is believed that nature problems, i.e. climate change, can be solved through nature inspiration in the built environment. In other words, biomimicry, which is nature mimicking “simulation,” is a contemporary method that seeks sustainable solutions by imitating nature’s patterns. Biomimicry in architecture has already been discussed in some research works, where it was used as an approach to sustainable building design. Additionally, the energy consumption issue was addressed in cities through building skins. Yet, it is still challenging to be fully inspired by nature, and biomimetic approaches are not completely fulfilled in buildings’ design due to their modernity. This chapter will first discuss the smart cities and sustainability concept, followed by biomimicry use in architecture. Finally, it concludes with a framework of fully involving biomimetic approaches in the planning and design of smart cities to achieve sustainability.
