Evaluating the Suitability of Locations for Solar Power Plants Using the AHP Methodology and GIS: A Case Study of Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina

In recent years, Bosnia and Herzegovina have experienced a notable surge in interest and investment in renewable energy, in line with global sustainability efforts and a shift away from fossil fuels. The “European Green Deal” emphasizes the necessity of prioritizing energy efficiency and renewable energy development. Trebinje, located in the southernmost part of Republika Srpska, emerges as an ideal location for solar energy projects due to its abundant sunlight and favorable climate conditions. With ample sunshine hours, Trebinje holds significant potential for solar power generation, contributing to regional renewable energy objectives. To leverage this potential, researchers and policymakers are employing innovative methodologies, such as the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to identify optimal sites for solar installations. Through the integration of AHP’s analytical capabilities and GIS spatial insights, stakeholders can evaluate geographical and socioeconomic factors to inform decision-making processes. This approach ensures that solar projects maximize energy potential while minimizing environmental impact and addressing local community needs. In this paper, we will analyze the suitability of different areas within Trebinje for solar power development using AHP and GIS techniques, considering factors such as solar irradiance, land availability, proximity to infrastructure, and socioeconomic considerations.
