The Simulated Air Traffic Control Environment (SATCE) is an emerging technology training environment designed to replicate Air Traffic Control (ATC) scenarios, intending to enhance communication competency. The adoption of SATCE in aviation training offers a training environment that is more realistic and immersive. This is achieved by the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in communication, which accommodates the training needs by simulating regulated traffic volume and events. SATCE also incorporates characteristics of Competency-Based Training & Assessment (CBTA), namely in the areas of phraseology and procedures. The presented research was conducted by Purdue University School of Aviation and Transportation Technology (SATT) and Advanced Simulation Technology inc.'s (ASTi) - Simulated Environment for Realistic ATC (SERA) technology in the A320 MPS Flight Simulation Training Device (FSTD). The ongoing research focuses on the implementation of the SATCE to facilitate the improvement of knowledge and skill development for aviation subject matter experts (SMEs). ASTi-SERA technology provides a realistic and immersive environment for SMEs to strengthen their understanding and practical abilities - a cognitive approach focusing on communication competency. The studies undertaken by the Purdue team seek to investigate the behavior and performance of various training scenarios within the context of SATCE. The presented case study involves the design, testing, and certification of the implementation of different flight devices in the existing airspace categorization environment. The Purdue-SATT strategy for SATCE places emphasis on enhancing the efficacy and efficiency of aviation training programs on a worldwide scale, specifically in the context of the Communication Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA).
