We present a comprehensive discussion on the implementation of a crew resource management (CRM) training regime required for an effective Distress Assistance with Real-Time Aircraft Telemetry (DART) program. The DART concept aims to enhance aviation safety by providing continuous streaming of aircraft telemetry data, and an open voice communication channel, to ground-based support teams, enabling timely and informed assistance to flight crews in non-nominal situations or a state of emergency. Because this requires the integration of remote parties into CRM, we focus this paper on the CRM protocols essential for the successful integration of DART in general, and the remote aspects in particular. We explore the CRM training frameworks that would support the DART program’s operational efficacy and analyze the impact of real-time data streaming on decision-making processes within the flight crew and between the crew and ground support personnel. The paper also discusses the technical and psychological aspects of CRM, emphasizing the importance of stress reduction techniques, structured decision-making models, and effective communication strategies. Our findings indicate that incorporating comprehensive CRM training tailored to the needs of a DART program can significantly improve response times and decision quality in critical situations. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research and development, suggesting pathways for integrating advanced technologies and refining CRM practices to further enhance aviation safety. By addressing both the technical implementation and human factors involved in the DART system, this paper provides a holistic view of its potential to improve distress management in aviation, ultimately aiming to reduce the incidence of incidents and accidents and improve the overall decision quality even in non-critical situations.
