Learning on mobile devices has demonstrated significant effectiveness in language acquisition for a wide range of learners of English as a second language (ESL) and foreign language (EFL). The integration of advanced technologies, including AI and virtual reality, in language learning apps, has revolutionized engagement and personalized instruction, yet there remains a gap in the application of sound learning theories. Current commercial language learning products are seen as more tech-focused than education-focused. Balancing these two aspects is crucial for developing impactful and engaging learning experiences for learners. Grounded in learning theories and leveraged by AI technologies, Livelingo offers multiple authentic entry points to language learning and supports interactions between the child and their environment, technology, and peers/parents. This working paper calls for greater attention to embedding learning theories into the creation of AI-empowered learning experiences for learners.
