What’s the Value of Science Fiction for Future-Oriented Human-Computer Interaction: The Role of Innovative Catalysts

The spiritual core of science fiction is a kind of thought experiment of the relationship between human, science, and technology. Science fiction, whether in the form of literature, comics, cartoons, games, or especially in films, offers a form of exploration to delve into the boundless potential of future-oriented human-computer interaction. This study adopts a science fiction perspective and utilizes case studies to elucidate the value of science fiction in catalyzing forward-thinking design innovations in human-computer interaction. The research encompasses 35 seminal science fiction movies as subjects of inquiry. The research mainly discusses how science fiction can play a role as an innovative trigger for future human-computer interaction design from four aspects: “The evolution of human-computer relationship”, “The genres of human-computer interaction”, “The diversity of human-computer scenarios”, and “The speculation of human-computer ethics”. The “Evolution of Human-Computer Relationships” traverses four stages: “Human-computer Interaction,” “Human-computer Collaboration,” “Human-computer Co-Creation,” culminating in “Human-computer Symbiosis.“ “The Genres of Human-computer Interaction” are categorized into “External Interaction,” “Partial Substitution,” and “Internal Fusion.“ “The Diversity of Human-computer Scenarios” encompasses diverse fields such as medicine, education, offices, consumption, and entertainment. Lastly, “The Speculation of Human-computer Ethics” delves into five critical areas: “Human Existence,” “Safety & Privacy,” “Accident Responsibility,” “Consciousness Awakening,” and “Machine Rights.“ Finally, by analyzing the disparities between scientific facts and science fiction, the study outlined the constraints of science fiction in predicting the futuristic development trends of human-computer interaction. It also highlighted the crucial issues that educators, researchers, and designers must address when leveraging science fiction as a springboard for innovation. These issues encompass “commercial applicability”, “technical feasibility”, and “social ethics”. This research has broadened the innovative horizons of human-computer interaction design, offering fresh inspiration and perspectives to designers seeking to innovate in the realm of interaction design in the future context.
