Comprehensive Digitization of the “Kazlacha” Circular Enclosure Complex: An Adaptive Synergistic Approach

This paper explores synergistic 3D digitization techniques to more fully document and more widely promote archaeological discoveries and artifacts, as well as digital methods for their preservation and presentation. The synergy approach combining georeferencing, laser scanning, 360-degree HDR photography, close-range photogrammetry and aerial photogrammetry is applied to the archaeological site of Kazlacha, located in southeastern Bulgaria. Specific to this site is that it is located on a private arable land, which requires backfilling after each archaeological campaign. This evoked the application of an innovative method to comprehensively document the excavation of the site in retrospect. The effectiveness of the proposed 3D approach for documenting archaeological sites that cannot be conserved and are subjected to seasonal intervention is demonstrated here with the emphases on the importance to preserve knowledge about them and accumulate data for their subsequent complex study and presentation. The digital archive, preserving all the data from the archaeological investigations of the site over time, is made available to the scientific audience and the rest of the public through the CLaDa Bulgaria platform.
