The prominence and, at times, nation-defining impact and function of sportswriters on American culture during the 20th century is discussed through the writings of, among others, Jimmy Cannon, Grantland Rice, John McPhee and Paul Gallico. In the course of this analysis, the supremacy of America as a wellspring of literary sports journalism throughout the 1900s is established.
