The case for Simon Barnes, for many years The Times’ (London) chief sportswriter, being viewed as the archetype of the self-consciously literary modern sportswriter is articulated. Barnes has himself developed a philosophy of sport which emphasises the importance of viewing sport as metaphor, and Barnes’s thinking is discussed as a means of underscoring this book’s argument about literary sports writing being a form of ‘worldmaking’.
