The optic radiation (OR) arises from the lateral geniculate nucleus, at the termination of the optic tract, lateral to the medial geniculate nucleus, and inferolateral to the pulvinar, to terminate in the medial occipital lobe. The inferior portion of the OR passes anteriorly in the temporal lobe (Meyer’s loop), superior and lateral to the hippocampus, and sweeping around the temporal horn. OR then extends posteriorly through the temporal lobe within the deep layer of the sagittal stratum, passing above the ventricle, deep to the middle temporal gyrus, and medial inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus. OR then extends to the calcarine fissure. En route, it contacts occipital projections from the pulvinar.
