This work constitutes an attempt to present the history of modern science graphically by means of charts, tables, ‘maps’, tableaus, flowcharts and overviews. Expressed differently, what is attempted here is a cartography of the history of science. This approach gives overviews and outlines, and emphasizes contexts and relations (including influences and oppositions), and connections between different scientists and between traditions. Furthermore, it makes these contexts and connections almost instantaneously visually apparent – close contexts and outlines but often also broader and more long-term contexts and overviews, which indicate the more general trends in the history of science.
