The article references a laboratory-based experiment conducted to assess the effectiveness of a synthesized polymer in retaining moisture on haul roads and controlling dust emissions. The laboratory-based experiment was carried out to measure the moisture retention efficiency of haul road dust using a synthesized polymer. The experiment was conducted in a controlled environment, specifically an oven, to ensure consistent conditions throughout the testing. Synthesized polymer namely Polyacrylamide (PAM) as a dust suppressant at two different temperatures 30 ℃ and 40 ℃. The PAM was synthesized by free radical polymerization technique using CAN initiator. The dust sample was characterized by sieve analysis. PAM of 0.2 weight percentage of polymer was mixed with water and this solution was sprayed over the dust sample. The effectiveness of polymer is validated and compared through tap water which is applied instead of polymer solution in haul road dust sample. To assess the relative performance, the experiment was replicated by using solely tap water as the dust suppressant. The retention of moisture content in polymer treated and only tap water samples are measured at one-hour intervals up to 7-h duration. It is found that the application of PAM polymer solution and only water help to reduce the dust generation by 32% & 18% after 8 h and 26% & 2.23% after 3 h at 30 ℃ and 40 ℃ respectively. Results stipulate that Polyacrylamide polymer solution gives better moisture retention efficiency than only water which provides good control over the dust emission from haul road of mine.
