ISO geometrical product specification (GPS) standards provide a framework for assessing how closely a real feature aligns with its nominal feature, specifically the compliance of geometrical characteristics with specified conditions (e.g. tolerance zones or gauge conditions). This paper presents a research and development roadmap aimed at modeling a global process, focusing on the situation characteristics between features. It emphasizes the explicit use of a minimum set of situation features (a point on a line in a plane). We propose a new generic tool called the Mutual Situation Module (MSM), which systematically encodes the various situation characteristics by handling each degree of freedom between any two minimum sets of situation features. Application cases include the absolute situation of toleranced features with respect to datum features, the relative situation of features within a collection, and the situation of any kind of ideal features. Our goal is to establish a comprehensive Global Process to Set any kind of Geometrical Product Specification (GPS^2).
