Detection of the Ongoing Human Interventions in the Mahananda System
摘要
This chapter deals with preparing a typological inventorization of the anthropogenic interventions that are ongoing and controlling the rivers’ reconfiguration and liveability. The dataset includes multidated satellite images, the Google Earth platform, data procured from governmental agencies and several rigorous primary surveys. In this process, a detailed landuse classification is performed, data regarding sediment withdrawal are procured, the longitudinal, as well as the lateral connectivity, is measured, and along with these, all the point sources of pollutionPoint sources of pollution are geotagged. The major anthropogenic alterationsAnthropogenic alterations include rapid and extensive urbanization, embankingEmbanking, sediment extractionSediment extraction and pouring of urban waste. However, such interventions are only found in the floodplains and not in the hills. The river-wise comparison revealed that while Balason is mostly disturbed by sediment extraction and embankments; Mahananda is disturbed due to urbanization, embankments and waste disposal.
