To achieve water and food security, ensure sustainable production and consumption, and reduce land degradation, watershed management is one of the key global strategies. Several initiatives have been introduced in the Indian subcontinent to enhance crop and water productivity while managing natural resources. While some of these initiatives initially demonstrated success, their long-term viability faced challenges due to various environmental and socio-economic factors. The Government of India has also launched several initiatives, underscoring the need for an extensive layout to guide the identification, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of watershed development activities. To address this need, our study adopts a holistic approach combining geospatial and agroecological methodologies to locate potential watershed development zones in India. We integrated appropriate agronomic, chemical, mechanical, and agrostological techniques customized for soil management and the conservation of green and blue water across various basins and agroecological zones. These proposed practices are further expanded toward value chain development, ensuring nutritional and economic benefits. Various stakeholders have been identified at the state, district, block, and village levels across regions to facilitate the promotion, implementation, and monitoring of these site-specific interventions. These stakeholders are intended to play a crucial role in maintaining the agricultural value chain and expediting the adoption of the proposed technologies and management strategies. The study finally adapts a system thinking approach to assemble these improved land use strategies into a project cycle. Such a critical combination of multi-disciplinary impact pathways provides the potential roadmap toward achieving new generation watersheds in India.
