Ronald Coase devoted his career to explaining and defending the role of private mechanisms for the efficient allocation of resources. The contribution for which he will be most remembered, and that pervades his work, is his argument that the costs of using the market, or transaction costs, can be a significant impediment to efficient private ordering. Their existence serves to explain the need for a legal system and can aid us in designing optimal legal rules.
