New Biobased Materials: Exploratory Analysis of the Actors Developing New Biobased Materials in Chile

This manuscriptBiobased materials in Chile presents an analysis of the stateState of the artArt of several actors who are currently working on the development of new materials in ChileChile in pursuit of a circular economyCircular economy. In ChileChile, some units of developers have been gradually researching new materials aiming to add value to the organic solid waste generated by small and medium national industries through their application in new materials and products. These communities have the potential to generate and drive knowledge not only in the product field, but also manufacturing industries can manufacture new materials, reintegrate by-products as new resources and establish new productive processes. To carry out this study, the main activities, the types of projects and ways of reaching the community of these actors were collected and analyzed through an exhaustive bibliographic review, surveys and interviews with the leaders of these spacesSpace. With the abovementioned, it was possible to study and systematize the information collected, managing to establish the profile of these units. The technological resources they have, means of dissemination and their connection with the environmentEnvironment were also identified. As a result, a certain disconnection is perceived between these units, a high concentration in the Metropolitan Region and very heterogeneous dissemination of results, with a rather massive and inefficient strategy in linking actors. This analysis addresses an opportunity and a challenge for ChileChile. Challenge, because these new materials lack homologation, and their mechanical performance is slightly lower than traditional materials. Opportunity, since the productive capacity of the Chilean fruit, forestry and aquaculture industry at a global level, the quantity and quality of the waste resulting from industrial processes is high and they are feasible to be used as inputs for new materialities.
