In this chapter, I argue that while comparative research has traditionally focused on gaze to understand mother-infant interaction and its impact on the infant’s development of social cognition, by being embedded in the community, I was able to identify how other modes of interaction, in particular touch, are key to mother-infant understanding, social learning, and cultural development. I will defend my perceptual thesis by showing how touch can provide us with an alternative way to study mother-infant interaction in apes and the development of social cognition, a way that can include other modes of interaction used by mother and infant chimpanzees.
