Coastal Hazards and Mangrove Dynamics: Assessing Mangrove Contribution as Coastal Guardians to Erosion and Coastline Stability Using Satellite Imagery and Advanced Indexing with Spatial Approach

This study quantifies the crucial role of mangroves in enhancing coastal stability, using satellite imagery and advanced indexing to assess their ability to protect against erosion, enhance sediment accumulation, and address soil stability challenges. Amid climate change, rising sea levels, and increased coastal development, our findings highlight the essential relationship between mangrove conservation and coastal health. We advocate for a strategy that combines preserving existing mangroves with restoring damaged areas, emphasizing the necessity of focused reforestation and sustainable land-use practices. This approach promises to improve coastal management practices, offering efficient responses to environmental stressors and underscoring the critical need for collaborative action to protect these vital ecosystems. In this chapter, we explore the contributions of mangrove forests in the stability of coastlines on Hatiya Island and Nijhum Dwip in Bangladesh, with the aim of optimizing conservation efforts. Mangrove forest distribution and coastline dynamics were estimated by analyzing the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. The results indicate that mangroves play an important role in stabilizing the coastline of Hatiya Island and Nijhum Dwip in Bangladesh. Specifically, the northern coastline of Hatiya Island, where mangroves are absent, showed less stability compared to the southern coastline, where mangroves are present, during the period from 2015 to 2023. This finding highlights the significant impact of mangroves on coastline stability. By analyzing long-term time series data, this spatial approach empowers us to implement preventative actions before environmental stressors escalate. Adopting this spatial approach can enhance coastal management practices by providing essential information that enables efficient, proactive responses, thereby underscoring the critical need for collaborative action to safeguard these vital ecosystems.
