Augmenting Carbon Sink Capacity Through Nature Based Solutions for Climate Change Mitigation: A Case Study of India

Nature-based solutions represent an effective strategy for addressing CO2 emissions reduction by enhancing carbon sink capacity that contributes to climate change mitigation and the restoration of ecological services. Various nature-based solutions, particularly those involving green vegetation, water bodies, and soil, have been intended to mitigate carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions. Nature-based solutions characterize an approach that captures the strength of nature, providing a means to support the preservation of ecological services while also addressing socioeconomic goals. Carbon sink capacity is a key factor in achieving carbon neutrality in climate change, and natural-based solutions are leading efforts. Natural-based solutions involve ecological-based practices. Utilising natural-based solutions across sectors can significantly reduce carbon emissions. The study strategically highlights three main domains with 19 sub-sectors of natural-based solutions under the Indian initiatives. The study findings have practical implications, suggesting that natural-based solutions in forward-looking sectors have the potential to reach carbon neutrality. The study highlights the importance of considering natural-based solutions in a tangible and practical solution.
