This chapter considers how Québec’s relationship with the United States has influenced politics within Québec. The principal argument of this chapter is that political developments in the U.S. in recent decades have been broadly unfavorable to sovereigntists. First, despite free trade agreements, considerable uncertainty persists in the Québec-U.S. economic relationship. Second, the U.S. policy of non-interference in Canadian affairs has not prevented the U.S. government from expressing support for Canadian unity. Third, controversial foreign policy decisions by the United States have tended to unite, rather than divide, Canadians and Québecers since the end of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Lastly, large shift in the attitudes of Québecers toward the United States during different presidential administrations have had little effect on Québecer’s attitudes toward Canada.
