The idea of Québec’s Americanness is 50 years old. In the world of scholarly knowledge, this concept has been addressed in the disciplines of literature, history, geography, sociology, and political science. It has further made its way into media outlets and the general public, so much so that the word has almost lost its meaning. The idea has also “shook” the representations that Québecers had of their heritage. The recognition of the place of the Americas and the United States in the historical and contemporary identity of Québec has made it necessary to review the place that France has inordinately occupied. The idea of the Americanness of Québec is undoubtedly the main marker of the cultural and political debate of the last thirty years.
