Accessibility to daily need services and connectivity within urban fabric has always been impacted during urban development. This study examines the evolution and impact of Abu Dhabi’s urban development on the accessibility and connectivity of its neighborhoods through morphological mapping, pedestrian accessibility, and connectivity metrics. It analyzes six suburban neighborhoods against one sample from West Island to explore the influence of political and socioeconomic factors on neighborhood design. Through Pedestrian Route Directness (PRD), Reach, and Gravity analysis, this study highlights the challenges of suburban sprawl, promoting socio-spatial segregation and automobile dependency to access amenities. Furthermore, it assesses the interaction between land use and transportation and provides guidelines for strategic urban interventions to improve Abu Dhabi’s suburbs’ current state. The findings indicate that Al Falah neighborhood exhibits the best-performing non-residential land-use distribution, promoting accessibility. In contrast, the streets and alleys grid network in Shakhbout City exhibits the highest connectivity results, with zero failing plots in the PRD test. Following the previous observations, the study then retrofits the worst-performing samples, Al Shamkha and Madinat Al Riyadh neighborhoods. The interventions include transitioning T-intersections into 4-way intersections, the strategic placement of alleys, the introduction of pedestrian crossings, and improvements in the non-residential land-use distributions. The results of such augmentations indicate improvements in Reach and PRD values, signifying enhanced accessibility and a more connected urban fabric. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on urban sustainability by advocating for intentional design choices that prioritize pedestrian experience and connectivity.
