Organizational and Technological Issues in Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs)
摘要
Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) are gaining traction as innovative forms of organizing. Built on blockchain technology, these organizations are characterized by the absence of traditional leadership structures and are instead driven by code, community, and common objectives. Operating via smart contracts, DAOs aim to challenge the hierarchy and bureaucracy of conventional organizations. However, despite their promising vision, DAOs face considerable obstacles, such as low engagement, decision-making bottlenecks, and technical complexities that can alienate non-expert participants. This chapter traces the history of DAOs and discusses the main forms of governance. Then, drawing from the infamous The DAO hack of 2016, the chapter highlights both the technological vulnerabilities and organizational weaknesses of DAOs. It then offers insights into how future DAOs can be designed to be more resilient and adaptable.
