Understanding the Seasonal Proximate Composition of Himalayan Snow Trout (Schizothorax labiatus) for Ensuring Food Security

Fish is widely recognised as one of the most significant and healthy source of animal protein and other nutrients. Moisture, protein, fat and ash act as the primary components of fish. The goal of this study was to generate information about the proximate composition of the important food fish of Kashmir valley in order to maximise its use. During the current study, a total of 864 samples of Schizothorax labiatus were obtained from river Sindh and river Jhelum with 432 samples (216 males and 216 females) collected from each water body. The findings revealed that a significant (P < 0.05) change in the proximate data of S. labiatus was noted across the seasons, but no significant (P > 0.05) difference between the sexes was seen in both habitats. Also, insignificant (P > 0.05) disparity was noted between the two water bodies in terms of season or sex except, ash and NFE contents during spring and autumn seasons. Significantly (P < 0.05) highest quantity of moisture in both genders of S. labiatus was estimated during the winter season, whereas lowest value was observed in the summer season in each water body. Contrary to this, from each water body, significantly (P < 0.05) highest levels of protein and fat were recorded in both genders of S. labiatus during summer, whereas minimum values were noted in the winter. Seasonal differences in ash content was also observed with highest values noted significantly (P < 0.05) during spring in river Sindh and winter in river Jhelum, respectively. From each water body, the maximum quantity of nitrogen free extract in both sexes of S. labiatus was observed during spring, while lowest values were reported in the summer from river Sindh and autumn in river Jhelum. The information gathered in this study on proximate composition of S. labiatus would be useful in formulating strategies for consumption and industrial use of this fish species.
