Thinking with attunement, exposures, and vulnerabilities, this chapter offers an overview of what I like to think of as “dust conversations”—a growing interdisciplinary literature that thinks about the geographies and poetics of dust. Often, these conversations oscillate across a planetary imagination, in which dust is the traveler (among other characters), and an intimate imaginary, in which dust is the toxic, pollutant, and matter out of place. Taking breathing as a cue (“Breath in- Breath out”) and within this oscillation, I thread the chapter through sites where I (we) can drift and settle and drift again. I center stories of dust told from the specific geographies of the Middle East and North Africa. These are sites that often appear in the stories of dust, though rarely are these stories told from their perspective. These are sites through which I attune to dust as an index. I want to emphasize that in thinking of dust as index, we are obligated to hold its politics as well as its poetics.
