Since 2018, all ETAPS proceedings have been published as gold open access books. ETAPS was among the first conferences to find a model to finance gold open access proceedings, without asking a high contribution from the authors of the accepted papers. This paper outlines the process that led to the ETAPS gold open access model. It also discusses how this model has inspired other conferences, and speculates about future challenges and opportunities in conference publishing.
