Nowadays, most civil engineering projects are based on locating geospatial data, specified by their coordinates (X, Y, H), which provide point positioning for many purposes, such as establishing a network of control points, defining a cartographic database for project development and preparing a dataset for the setting out of designed features. Although working with coordinates in this context is fairly straightforward, especially when using CAD or GIS platforms, there may be instances where calculations are needed, especially when new control points or feature points need to be added or retrieved from a database. To this end, this chapter covers the main concepts of coordinate geometry for point positioning.
