Supergene iron ores represent a large proportion of iron ores in the world and are particularly abundant in Australia, the largest iron ore producer and exporter, India and Brazil. The supergene iron ore includes the banded iron-formations (BIF) and the derived martite-goethite ores, the detrital iron deposits (DID) and the channel iron deposits (CID). The martite goethite iron ores are subdivided into supergene lateritic and mimetic types. The supergene lateritic ore results from in situ weathering of BIF under wet and warm tropical climates. The supergene mimetic enrichment of BIF shows a pseudomorphing of the gangue minerals by goethite. The upper part of the supergene mimetic iron ore is, in turn, subject to weathering, generating a hydrated zone. The DID represent a small percentage of supergene ores, and they are the result of the physical weathering and accumulation from adjacent pre-enriched in situ iron ores. The CID are giant Fe-rich deposits of fluviatile and lacustrine origin occurring in the Hamersley Province, the Yilgarn Craton and the Ashburton Basin of Western Australia, and in Kazakhstan.
