Sampling Methods of Fish in the Marine Ecosystem

Fish is a sentinel organism commonly used as biological indicator in monitoring the marine ecosystem’s health. For that reason, numerous sampling methods have been developed and practiced to accommodate scientific study and investigation. This article presented ten fishing techniques that can be used in the sampling method of fish in the marine ecosystem. Five active types of gears are handline, cast net, beach seine net, trawl, and spearfish, whereas the other five passive types are gillnet, fish trap, underwater visual census (UVC), baited remote underwater video (BRUV), and hydroacoustic. Each sampling gear and technique has its operational method and requirement. Approximately, one to two operators are required except for beach seine as it requires more than three operators at once. Eight techniques can be used in deep water, but cast net and beach seine can be used only for shallow water especially wadable zone. Hydroacoustic however can be applied in both zones. All fishing techniques require the assistance of boat either to reach the location or to deploy the gear. Various deployment methods are involved due to specific design and operational methods of each fishing gear. Handline, fish trap, and BRUV surveys specifically require the usage of bait to lure the fish. Therefore, based on the budget, experimental design, and the requirement of the research data, researcher should consider all these criteria prior to fish sampling.
